How to Identify Duplicate Content:

• Go to Google and search for site:yoursite.com.
• This will show up the list of all the pages that are indexed in google.

Some times you may notice mobile version of pages and search results getting indexed in Google as follows.

• yoursite.com/2013/04/keyword1-keyword2-keyword3.html?m=1
• yoursite.com/2013/04/keyword1-keyword2-keyword3.html?m=0
• yoursite.com/2013/04/keyword1-keyword2-keyword3.html/search?abcd

The content in such kind of pages resembles the content of the main url thereby forming duplicate content.

You can also find Duplicate content via Google Webmaster Tools:

• Go to Google Webmaster Tools.
• Now navigate to Optimization then HTML Improvements.
• There you can find the list of all Duplicate Content.

How to Fix Duplicate Content Issue?

Fixing duplicate content is a very big task and you must take care that this content wont get indexed again in future as well.

Remove Duplicate URL's from Google:

First and the foremost thing you have to do is to completely remove all the duplicate content from Google Index.To do this just follow the below steps.

• Go to Google.com and search for site:yoursite.com
• Now this will list you all the list of urls that are indexed in Google.
• Find the urls that are ending with wrong extension like ?m=1 ,?m=0 etc.
• Now open that page and copy the url of that particular page.
• Then go to your webmaster tools then navigate to Optimization then Remove URL'S.
• Then click on Create New URL Removal Request.
• Then paste the url there and then submit.
• When Google indexes your website for the next time those submitted urls must be disappeared from search results.

Step to Avoid Duplicate Content Getting Indexed in Google in Future:

After you are done with removing all the duplicate urls you have to make sure that these removed urls wont gets indexed in future as well.

What does this code do?

• This code makes Google to index only those pages ending with ".html" and it blocks all those pages which are ending with urls like ".html?m=1" and ".html?m=0" etc.

Configuring URL Parameters in Google Webmaster Tools:

This step is optional.Avoid it if you are not confident enough to configure Webmaster Settings.

Google Webmasters provides an additional feature to configure url parameters that gets indexed in Google.Use this with precautions or else your whole website might get de-indexed.

• In Webmaster Tools navigate to Configuration then URL Parameters.
• You can see the url parameters as follows.

• By default Google sets certain crawl value for each of these parameters.
• Now the main issue is with mobile version parameter which is "m".
• Click on edit and follow the settings shown below in the screenshot and save those settings.

Though I configured url parameters using Google Webmaster Tool it doesn't seem to work in most of the cases.So it is suggested to follow the below methods as well.

Changing Robots.txt File:

Note:This is only for Advanced users.Use this only if you are using responsive theme or use this only if you are not able to fix this duplicate content issue after following all the other steps.

• Open your Blogger Dashboard.
• Then go to Settings then Search Preferences.
• In Search Preferences enable custom robots.txt which will be disabled by default.
• Enable it and paste the following code.

User-agent: Mediapartners-Google Disallow:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /search
Allow: /
User-agent: *
Disallow: /*.html
Allow: /*.html$
Sitemap: http://www.techinyou.net/feeds/posts/default?orderby=UPDATED

•  In the above code replace www.techinyou.net with your website url then save it.

 Custom Robots Header:

This is one more advanced feature provided by Blogger and must be used with proper care or else your blog might get completely deindexed from google.

• Open blogger dashboard then Settings then choose Search Preferences.
• Enable Custom Robots header Tags which is disabled by default and follow the below settings show in the screenshot.

How a Wrong or Bad Template / Theme Can Ruin your Blog Ranking and Traffic

Two weeks back we switched to a new blogger template which was a Responsive template.Responsive design is the new trend to make your web design compatible with all devices.But the results were not as we expected.The responsive design had a negative impact on our blog traffic and ranking as well.

Traffic started sinking down: 

The ranking started sinking down from April 2nd 2013.I thought if it was either some Algorithmic update or some penalty has raised on my blog and I started finding out the fix for this issue.
Then I found that the responsive design has created duplicate content.Google started indexing both mobile version and desktop version url parameters which created duplicate content.

However I later came up with a solution to fix this duplicate content issue which I already discussed in detailed in an article on How to fix duplicate content issue in blogger.

Still the ranking went on dropping down:

I was expecting an increase in ranking and traffic in the next couple of days but the results were biased.Traffic went on decreasing which you can see from the below screenshot.
At that stage I was really very frustrated and thought of even selling the blog before the traffic completely goes down.

Decided to Revert Back to Old Theme:

Finally I decided to check if its the template which triggered the decline in ranking and reverted back to my old template.I had a proper backup of the old template.So it was very easy for me to revert back without much effort.

Results after Reverting back to Old Template:

Within the next 4 hours after I reverted back to old template the lost ranking started coming back to normal.After 24 hours all the keywords were back to their normal position and traffic back to normal.
Those two weeks of traffic downfall were horrible as I have only one active blog this time .So a traffic down fall will lead to decline in earnings as well.

Does Template/Theme Effect Blog Ranking?

Yes it does.

There are many factors that helps in better ranking of a blog in search engines like better indexing ,good page rank distribution with in the blog,Optimized Title and Header Tags etc.

 I will be discussing more about how to choose an optimized theme in a separate article.

How to Choose a Proper Template/Theme Design for your blog?

• Only use themes or templates which are designed by trusted or popular designers.
• Keep it simple and neat.
• Avoid too many javascripts. Javascripts not only effects the loading time but also effects the indexing of your blog in Google.
• Take a basic theme and start customizing it:- If you have basic idea of css and html instead of going for ready made themes start with a basic theme and customize it to your need.Basic templates which are available in Blogger Dashboard are SEO optimized by default.

Will we upgrade to a new Template in future?

The answer is No.

We already took all the risk on our sholders and tested many templates and found out that the template which we are using currently is the best and SEO Optimized template.I worked on this template for almost an year optimizing it for search engines and users.So I feel that this template is the best template so far.

Conclusion: 

Its very clear that a Template or Theme can impact huge on your blog.I suggest you to try few different templates and test each of the performace for a week or two on your blog.You will definitely notice a fluctuation in rankings.Use the one which improves your ranking and traffic and customize it to your need.

How to Reduce your Blog Bounce Rate..

Recently one of my dear Facebook friends shared a post with me regarding reducing the bounce rate of the blog. The article was incredible and I implemented the same on my blog.Surprisingly my bounce rates were dropped from 80% to 30% in couple of days, which is a remarkable change.

If you don't know, a bounce is when a visitor lands on your blog post and leave your blog right after reading the first post without moving to the next post is considered as bounce.The total number of views to the views which are bounces is considered as bounce rate. 

Generally blogs like this one have higher bounce rate as most of the visitors lands on a blog post and reads it then leaves the blog. Lower the bounce rate the better. Again bounce rate also depends on the niche of the blog. Though Google has quoted that they don't consider bounce rate as a factor in rankings, they might consider this in future for sure to filter good trusted websites.

Quick Tweak to Fix Bounce Rate:

There are many traditional ways to reduce bounce rates like decreasing the page load time, interlinking the blog posts and many others. But, in this post I am going to share a quick tweak to the Google Analytics code which can reduce your bounce rate dramatically.

Note: All you have to do is change XXXXXXX with your Google Analytics ID which you can find easily from the original code.

How it Works? 

Google Analytics wait's till the second event is triggered, that means unless the visitor clicks on other page of your site the visit will be considered as bounce.

What did we do to the code?

We triggered the actual code and did some modification for a fair measure of bounce rate.This code considers only those visitors who left the site within the first 5 seconds.We also added one more parameter to the code, i.e if a visitor scrolls down to read the webpage the visit will no more be considered as bounce.

Final Words:

Google Analytics official blog has confirmed that we can adjust the bounce rate to our need and analyse the performance of the site/blog.You can tweak the above adjusted code as well and change the delay time for your own needs.

This method doesn't work anymore. Major search engines including google doesn't give importance to Reciprocal linking because it doesn’t reflects the genuineness of any link. 

2.Blog Commenting

It can be strange for you to know this fact but I am not wrong. Blog commenting is helpful in bringing traffic to your blog but it fails in Link building. Now a day, No one wants to share his PR with other bloggers, Who comment only for getting backlinks.  Most of the new bloggers are giving preference to CommentLuv enabled blogs for commenting because they think that, These blogs will give them a “do-follow” backlink. However, They are wrong because 87 out of 100 bloggers are not giving “do-follow” links to their commentators.

If you are looking for link building, Don’t waste your time on Blog commenting.

3. Getting Backlinks from Irrelevant Sites

These kinds of mistakes are quite popular and often committed by new bloggers. If you are looking for backlinks, You must concentrate on relevant websites only. If you have a blog Where you write about Technology, getting links from another blog related to fashion will harm you rather than helping. Getting a link from similar site is easy for those blogs, Which focus on a particular niche rather than focusing on large number of topics. A backlink is powerful and valuable, if it comes from a page which has few but quality links. So, try to find Quality sites first (Must be related to your site). Once done, Try to get backlink.

5. Getting a No-follow backlink

Getting a No-follow backlink is like getting nothing because Search engine spider doesn’t follow that link. Normally, Blogger use “no-follow” attribute to link those pages which seems useless to them.

• Understand difference between a dofollow and a nofollow link

Can I use software for building Links?

It is a common question, which is often asked by new bloggers because software are known for giving quick results. However, I never recommend any user to use Software for Link Building. I am saying this after noticing that, almost all websites or blogs which uses software for link building are penalized by Google algorithm updates.  If you are focusing on Long term result, Never use Software for Building Links.
Due to this reason, I recommend “Manual Link Building”. Guest Posting in Top blogs is one of the best way of Link Building.

Is it safe to hire an SEO expert who works at lower rate like $5

If any SEO expert claims that he can bring your site on first page of Google within few days(7 days) and is asking for just $5 or similar amounts, Don’t hire him. I am saying this because there is maximum possibility that, they will use softwares for building links. Manual link building takes time but once done, You won’t be penalized by Google or any Other search engine alogorithms. On the other hand, Link building using softwares gives quick result but you will be penalized during an algorithm updates.

Link building strategies which are really powerful and work are listed below:

1. Guest Posting on Top Blogs

According to me, Guest Posting on Top Blogs  is one of the best way to build links. However,  You must choose only those blogs which are similar to your blog otherwise you won’t get any benefit. You can convert your images into Links by using “Alt” tag. Actually, Search engine spider reads the textual contents without any issue but they can’t read Pictures. In order to inform them about our image, We use “Alt” tag. It will also give you better exposure in Image search.
